The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has sounded the alarm after revealing how its employees were kidnapped and abducted a week ago during the presidential and national elections.

This was stated in a Friday statement by INEC's Information and Voting Commissioner, Festus Okoye.

According to Festus, peaceful elections prevailed overall, but there was "a high level of violence".

He said that in some places there was "subjugation of some of our election officials to threats, harassment, intimidation, assault, kidnapping and even rape.

"The Commission expresses its appreciation to the families of its ad hoc staff members who lost their lives in this national mission and to other Nigerians who died during the election.

"It also expresses its deep regret and compassion for all the victims of this mindless violence. We are with them in these difficult times.

"Although they acknowledge their professionalism with regard to the safe and timely deployment of electoral staff and material, the behavior of certain members of the security agencies is a serious concern in some states of the Commission.

"This matter will be discussed directly with the Inspector General of the Police within the framework of the Inter-Agency Advisory Committee on Electoral Security (ICCES)."
