The Nigerian army said Thursday that 95 percent of its troops would take on security duties during the upcoming parliamentary elections. Almost 40 percent of the troops deployed would be in the northeast.

His spokesman Brig. Gen. Sani Usman said in a statement that it was not true that the troops in some other countries had paid rewards to influence their votes for a particular party alleged in the social media.

Brigadier General Usman said: "The Nigerian army has been made aware of some hints on various social media platforms, according to which a single aid for officers and soldiers has recently been paid to direct their choice to a specific political party. That is not true.

"In 2016, the payment of a single subsidy was started in order to support the forces deployed for Operation LAFIYA DOLE as one-stop maintenance and service.

"However, the allowance was extended to all employees of the Nigerian army because they were increasingly engaged in various internal security operations throughout the country.

"It is important to know that 95 percent of Nigerian army forces will assume security responsibilities during the upcoming parliamentary elections.

"Of these, nearly 40 percent are in the northeast. Therefore, it is grossly unfair and simply a nonsense to associate the Nigerian army with such worldly actions.

"We therefore ask all well-meaning Nigerians to distance themselves from such falsified and unjustified information as to smear the Nigerian army.

"Although investigations into these malicious allegations have not been completed, we would like to warn such unpatriotic individuals to stop the disaster immediately.

"We urge all officers and soldiers to refrain from actions that are not conducive to the discipline and code of conduct of the service, and to repeat the warning of the Chief Staff Staff during their conference with the Commander of the General Staff officers and the military commanders in all their actions remain neutral, impartial and transparent.

"Once again, I must point out that commanders at all levels will have no tolerance for any actions and interventions that tend to give candidates, political parties, ethnic or religious inclinations an undue advantage to the detriment of unity and the country's integrity from Nigeria.

"The Nigerian army has always been professional, impartial and apolitical. We would like to point out that this can not be changed by anything against the defamation campaign ".
