A hybrid Volkswagen Golf GTI?!? Not so fast. Expect the groundbreaking hot hatch to stick with what it does best, a gas engine for the next generation, a new report says.

Rumors circulated last autumn that VW could turn the GTI into a mild hybrid. Add some electrical grade to the hatch. Now Autocar Says that the mild hybrid technology will come to golf, but not the ones with squared seats and a notched gearshift.

So what is expected? An update for the EA888 2.0L Turbo Four is now here. Expect more power as the standard GTI delivers 252 horsepower and a 286-horsepower model replaces the current performance version. Both well over the current 228. It could be labeled as TCR, based on the eponymous racing series. VWs have already used this badge in Europe for an almost definitive edition of the current car.

The conversion of hybrid plans should be an attempt to preserve the character of the current car. To this end, Autocar also announces a new focus on more direct steering and the added power to create some dizziness.

It is not yet known when the new GTI will be released.
